Over the past few days, some Android users have been experiencing a bizarre issue where the Google Drive app is randomly crashing for them when using the ‘copy to clipboard’ function in any app or location, with no apparent explanation.

Android ‘copy to clipboard’ function triggering a Google Drive app crash

According to multiple reports, there are people currently unable to use ‘copy to clipboard’ feature of the Android ‘Share’ menu as it triggers a ‘Sorry! Drive has stopped unexpectedly’ pop-up. Apparently, before the error occurs, the device ‘freezes’ and the screen goes dark for a few seconds.

The most intriguing thing about the bug is that the crash occurs when using the ‘copy to clipboard’ function from any app, even if it has no relation to Drive.

This means that those affected are completely unable to use a basic day-to-day option that is especially useful for productivity and saving time. Also, most reports suggest that it all started after a recent update.

That said, some people have been dealing with the bug since a Drive app update from late November, while for others it is happening after the latest update on December 7. This could be due to the 1-2 week period it may take for some app updates to reach everyone.

For now, the only effective fix seems to be to uninstall the Google Drive updates until a new version arrives that definitively fixes this strange bug. Sadly, there is still no official word on the matter, so it is not known if Google is already aware of the bizarre situation.

Let’s hope that it won’t take long for Google to send an update that returns things to normal, and those affected can once again use one of the most basic and useful Android functions.
