Google Chromecast keeps disconnecting when casting YouTube videos for some Android users

Developed by Google, the Chromecast is a popular digital media player that allows users to stream content on their TV. Users can control the media using a mobile device or by using voice commands via Google Assistant.

While the initial version of Chromecast was released back in 2013, the latest version called Chromecast with Google TV is the first one in the series to come with a UI and a remote.

Having said that, Chromecast owners have had their fair share of bugs and issues such as the one where some Chromecast with Google TV users said they lost the option to enable Developer Mode and YouTube Kids app not casting to TVs.

And now, some Android users are saying that Chromecast keeps disconnecting (1,2,3,4,5) whenever they try to cast YouTube videos. Many say that the videos stop playing after a random interval of time.

While some say that they did not update either their Chromecast or YouTube app, others say that the issue surfaced after a recent update.

When casting videos from the YouTube app on Chromecast, videos will simply stop playing after a few (random number of) minutes and go back to the Chromecast background screen. This started happening on Thursday, October 28th, 2021. When the issue started I was running the then-latest version of Android 11; now I am on Android 12 (but note the issue started before I upgraded the phone’s OS). The firmware version of my Chromecast is 1.49.250946 and the YouTube app version is the latest.

Every few minutes the connection drops and Chromecast goes to default screen. I usually have to reboot the Chromecast and restart the phone app. Sometimes the sound turns off, prior to the connection dropping completely. A few days ago I thought I had found the problem, as after a dropout I found that the wi-fi bandwidth had dropped to 0.5 mbps while the ethernet stayed at 72. BT support did some tweaks and wi-fi has stayed at around 30, but the Chromecast still keeps dropping out. I know wi-fi interference can be a factor, and we get a strong signal from a neighbouring BT router.

Chromecast users said they tried resetting their devices and even cleared YouTube app data but it makes no difference.

Unfortunately, we were unable to find any workaround that might help. Moreover, with Google yet to say anything on the matter, it is still unclear what is causing the issue in the first place.

Nonetheless, we will be keeping an eye out for more information on the Chromecast disconnecting issue when casting YouTube problem and update this space as and when required so stay tuned.
