Google’s cross-platform web browser, Google Chrome, is widely used on mobile devices as well as personal computers.

A large number of people use Google Chrome on Linux distributions apart from Android, Windows, macOS, or iOS powered devices.

Now, several users have been facing a problem with the recent versions of Google Chrome for Linux.

As per multiple reports from the Google Support community, the cast to Chromecast functionality is broken in the recent versions of the web browser for Linux distros.

Users have listed that the said issue is present in Chrome 88, Chrome 89 and Chrome 90 (beta) 64-bit versions.

And for my final test for today, I’ve just downgraded to Version 86.0.4240.75 (Official Build) (64-bit):
Everything works as before. There isn’t a problem with casting.Source

However, Chrome 86 and 87 versions for Linux does not have the cast to Chromecast functionality issue.

Since Google is yet to acknowledge and fix the said issue, users have come across a temporary workaround on their own.

It appears that disabling hardware acceleration for Chrome on Linux seems to solve the problem for some users.

I also noticed that casting is broken now. What I noticed though is that it tries to use VA-API and that fails. So I can bypass this problem with starting the browser with –disable-gpu. Hopefully VA-API problems will be fixed soon.

While this is not an official workaround, users can indeed go for it until Google releases a fix for the issue.

Nevertheless, a Community Specialist is logging user reports with the concerned team and has also asked affected users to share additional feedback.

This further indicates that the issue might have already come to Google’s attention and a fix may soon arrive.
