New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on June 8, 2023) follows:

In an era where smart technology has become an integral part of our lives, Google has been at the forefront of innovation with its Nest Cam series.

Designed to provide enhanced home security and surveillance, Google’s Nest Cam has revolutionized the way we monitor and protect our living spaces.

But a recent update seems to have had an adverse effect on video quality.

Google Nest Cam video quality issue

Over the course of the past few days, numerous Google Nest Cam owners have observed a sudden drop in video quality (1,2,3).

The issue is apparent from the moment users view their camera feeds, as the videos appear unnaturally bright or darker than before. Night vision also appears grainy.

This decline in video quality can be attributed to the rollout of v1.67 of the Nest Cam’s software as those who remain on version 1.65 have not been affected.

Unfortunately, the Nest Cam’s automatic update feature means that users have no control over the installation of this update.

Consequently, affected users cannot prevent the update or revert to the previous version to resolve the problem.

I’ve recently installed new Google Nest Cameras. They had been running perfectly, however I noticed night vision on 1 of the camera’s had deteriorated significantly. I toggled the night vision from auto, to on, to off and back to auto. Its definitely on when its on auto, but its considerably poorer than a week ago (a lot darker). The camera’s are mounted and wired with the genuine Google cable, so they haven’t moved or changed any other factors.

If you’ve reviewed your Nest Outdoor Battery Camera recently and the video is very, very bright and unnatural, it is due to a recent firmware push. I RMA’d one, which was just delivered to Google today, and then installed a second one. The second one, within 2 days and after that firmware update, experienced the same issue.

This isn’t the first time Google Nest Cam users reported this issue as it was first discovered in the v1.63 (319576) last year.

It is important to note that the video quality problem is specific to the Nest Cam (Battery) and Nest Cam with Floodlight models, which share the same underlying hardware.

Other devices such as the Nest Cam Wired, Nest Doorbell models, and legacy Nest cameras do not appear to be experiencing the same video quality issues, even with the latest updates installed.

Issue acknowledged

Luckily, Google support said that the team is already aware of this issue and is currently looking into it. However. there’s no ETA for a fix.

Rest assured, Google will likely address the issue swiftly to ensure that Nest Cam owners can continue to enjoy high-quality video feeds from their devices.
