Over the past week, several Google Nest and Home owners have noticed that the Google Assistant is not responding to voice commands despite having not touched their setups. Fresh from picking up a new software update, it’s plausible that the glitch could have been triggered by this new firmware.

The Google Home ecosystem is no stranger to odd issues. There has been plenty of others before, and this issue with Assistant suddenly not responding to voice commands adds to the never-ending list. Apparently, the Nest speaker does recognize the “Hey Google” command, but it won’t just respond. There’s also no error message to shed light on what’s happening.

Interestingly, it’s still possible to adjust the speaker’s volume by tapping on the sides. The casting function is also unaffected, among other features. Only the voice commands seem broken this time.

Several people have had some luck after giving multiple “Hey Google” commands to their speaker. But this isn’t the experience you sign up for when buying into the Google Home ecosystem.

Google is aware & working on a fix

It’s often easy to fix such issues with a quick reboot or at worse, a factory reset. But neither is doing the trick for those affected. Luckily, reports of Google Assistant not responding to voice commands didn’t take long to catch Google’s attention. And as of this writing, they are looking into it.

Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your patience. Our teams are aware and looking into this issue at hand.

The Google Home ecosystem is quite popular, and it often gets most things right. But for a platform that’s meant to be hands-free, such an issue is a huge inconvenience. But the good news is that Google is working around the clock to address it in the shortest time possible.

We’ll let you know when the fix rolls out.
