More and more people are using Gmail nowadays and reasons for that include its convenience, simplicity and prevalence. Gmail may be extremely intuitive to use, but an occasional bug like the Gmail notification bug can hinder that.

Users have been complaining about the issue on official Gmail forums for almost a year now. Yet, Google does not seem to have provided a fix even as the complaints persist to date.

Exact same problem happening to me around January 2020. Notifications of unread mail pop up continously. Never been a problem before. There’s no obvious fix in “settings”. Perhaps complicating things further, my only “computer” is my smartphone. Is there a way to talk, chat, text, or email customer service at Gmail?

Same issue as others. When I go into Gmail and start reading the first unread email, the notification and icon go away. But as soon as I click on the next unread email, I get a notification icon (and vibration). Very annoying.

It appears that users are getting notified about unread mails that they have already received and dismissed. This seems to be present on Android devices only as there have been no reports from iOS.

The issue is a major annoyance for many, as the notification pops up and may even vibrate, even though the user is already aware of the email in question.

Disabling notifications could be a workaround, but users may miss emails that they actually want to see. The only viable workaround as of now seems to be disabling heads-up notifications for the app or switching to notification silent mode.

To do the above and make the notifications less bothersome, you can go to the notification section of Gmail and switch them to silent, as shown in the above image.

This may not be a permanent fix but can certainly be of help to troubled users.

Nonetheless, the issue seems to be present on all sorts of devices, and hence, is very likely to be a Gmail issue even though a forum mod has said otherwise:

I escalated the issue and that was the advice I received for Pedro. For all other Samsung users, the advice was to get in touch with your device support team for further assistance.

As I stated earlier “The issue seems extremely rare, and unfortunately neither those who help on here, nor those at Google Headquarters are experiencing it.” It does not appear to be a Gmail issue.

However, the problem has been escalated as said by the mod in the quotes above. For now, affected users can only wait for a fix from Google, fingers crossed.

That being said, if you are an Android 11 user and are experiencing other bugs since switching to the new OS, then we got it all covered over here.
