After last week’s rebranding and smartphone integration, Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, might be gearing up for another expansion. Evidence found in the latest beta version 15.6 of the Google app suggests that a Gemini app specifically designed for Assistant-powered headphones is in the works. This includes Google’s Pixel Buds series, which are also powered by the company’s AI assistant.

9to5Google uncovered code within the beta app hinting at this headphone-focused Gemini app. The code mentions that "Gemini mobile app is working on expanding availability to make it accessible on your headphones." Unfortunately, details regarding a launch timeline remain under wraps.

While the prospect of Gemini readily available on headphones is exciting, concerns linger about its current mobile limitations. Features like routines, media control, and reminders, once staples of the “Assistant” experience, are still absent from the Gemini mobile app. But Google has confirmed they are on the way.

The lack of information regarding compatibility with other devices like smartwatches and smart speakers further fuels the debate. However, the sentiment leans towards prioritizing a polished integration over a rushed and potentially subpar implementation on these diverse form factors.

Overall, the potential arrival of Gemini on headphones offers a glimpse into its expanding ecosystem. However, addressing current feature gaps and ensuring seamless integrations across different devices remain crucial for Gemini to solidify its position as a truly comprehensive AI assistant. Or a full-fledged Google Assistant replacement for that matter.
