The Pixel 8 Pro includes a number of exclusive features, like ‘Smart Reply‘ and ‘proofread’ for Gboard. As its name indicates, ‘proofread’ detects when there are potential typos in the text you are writing and suggests any grammatical improvements or corrections it deems necessary, going beyond the simple suggestions for misspelled words that are available on all Android devices.

That said, it seems that Google wants to boost the use of proofread in Gboard by making the corresponding button stand out noticeably thanks to a new and elegant animation that appears when the keyboard detects that there are potential corrections to apply. As spotted by GappsLeaks, the button will light up with an animated color gradient that probably seeks to encourage you to use the feature or even make you see that it is there, since there may be people who do not even know about its existence.

Currently, the animation is only partially implemented, since you need to enable some flags on the Gboard app to ‘unlock it’:

  • writing_helper_enable_access_point_animation
  • writing_helper_enable_free_chat
  • writing_helper

However, given its current status, it probably won’t take long to reach all Pixel 8 Pro owners. Using this type of resource seems like a good way to highlight options that may be being used less than they deserve, although it would also be good for Google to make ‘proofread’ available to more people since it is currently not only exclusive to the Pixel 8 Pro, but it only works in the US and in English.
