Good news if you are the owner of Galaxy S8 because it is receiving a new security update. The November security patch has been rolling out to more and more devices from various manufacturers in the past few weeks. Today, it is Galaxy S8’s turn.

The Galaxy S8 recently got an update, that brought with it a number of camera enhancements. The update, despite coming well in the middle of November, did not include the November Android security patch level. But this new update fixes that.

The November security update fixes a lot of severe vulnerabilities for the Android Operating System. You can read in more detail about the security patch by heading to the Android Security Bulletin.

The newest software version is available in selected regions. Moreover it has the same change list number (16983991) of October firmware. The bump from the previous builds (DSJ1/DSJC) is also fairly minimal.

Samsung’s official tracker for the Galaxy S8 is yet to be updated to reflect the DSK1 update details. FYI, we are talking about the Exynos powered global variant of Galaxy S8/S8+. The US models have Snapdragon chipset and have a separate update track.

The November update should be arriving over the air as version G950FXXS5DSK1 for the S8 and G955FXXS5DSK1 for the S8+. The changelog doesn’t stretch beyond the security patches, but we assume the usual bug fixes and performance improvements are included.

How to download

Keep in mind the update is being rolled out via OTA in batches and will take some time in hitting all the units. Though you can always check for the update by heading to System>>Software Updates>>Download updates manually.

However, we were able to grab the update using the handy tool named Frija. It downloads the firmware directly from Samsung’s Firmware Update Server (FUS) and has features like automatic decryption and bundle creation.

The update grabbed from Frija weighs in at about 4.3 GB in size for which we would recommend downloading it using a stable internet connection.

The Galaxy S8 was Samsung’s flagship device back in 2017. It was by far, the most refined smartphone at the time and today, it still holds its own. It is powered by the Snapdragon 835 or the Exynos 8895 SoC. There is a 1440×2960 AMOLED display, 4 GB RAM and a 3,000 mAh battery to keep everything powered.

Samsung has done a good job at keeping the Galaxy S8 updated. Galaxy S8 (Exynos) received the October security update on October 21, though the US carrier models lagged behind. But are they ever timely?
