New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…

Original story (published on March 1, 2021) follows:

No denying that the Chromecast with Google TV is one of the best streaming devices available out there on the cheap.

It comes with a new Google TV interface that boasts a unified home page displaying a populated list of things to watch from multiple apps and much better integration with the Google Assistant.

Besides the new UI, the new Chromecast also bundles a number of features and improvements that you won’t find on older Chromecast units.

For instance, the Chromecast finally gets a remote control alongside support for 4K streaming, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. But this isn’t to say all is rosy in the Chromecast with Google TV camp.

According to reports that have been doing rounds since late last year, several owners of the Chromecast with Google TV have been experiencing color distortion issues for some time now.

Apparently, the colors displayed on the TV on which the Chromecast is connected to come out looking good at first, but this quickly changes into a pink hue with all other colors distorted.

I’m having the same issue. Also with a Sony TV. I’ve tried all different settings, such as the resolution etc but keeps randomly happening. I have upgraded from a standard Chromecast and had no issues with using that.

Exact same problem here. Sony TV, no issues with Chromecast v3, and now at random times suddenly everything turns primarily pink.

Sticking with the comments above, it appears the color distortion issue affects Chromecast with Google TV users with Sony TVs. But a deeper dig into the thread suggests otherwise.

I continue to have this issue on my Samsung television, model code UN50MU6300. It’s on the latest version of its software, which is version 1290.

Same issue here with Philips TV. Previous chromecasts worked fine. Issue stopped for about a week and has now returned today. No idea what to do. Google should really address this.

Same problem. Replaced my Chromecast with a new ‘Chromecast with Google TV’ on my one year old 55 ” LG OLED. Everything fine at first, then the TV display slowly turned pink/purple over the course of half an hour or so. Cycling power to the Chromecast temporarily resets it to correct colours, but then it slowly turns pink again. Old Chromecast in the same HDMI port, and all other sources, are fine. Tried various changes to picture settings, to no avail. Needs sorting, or it’s going back!

To give a better representation of the color distortion issue on Chromecast with Google TV, some of those affected shared a bunch of screenshots, one of which we have added below.

Back in November 2020, a community specialist in the Chromecast with Google TV support forums did mention that the issue was being looked into, but reports of the issue are still showing up to date.

The team is aware of this issue and investigating it as we speak. I’ll be sure to keep this thread posted with the latest updates.

On the brighter side, it seems as though the search giant hasn’t totally forgotten about this issue. When asked about its status on Twitter, Google notes that a fix for the issue is in the works.

Unfortunately, there is no timeframe for the expected arrival of the fix, but it’s good to know that at least someone is working on a solution.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem.
