Mozilla Firefox remains one of the most popular contenders against any other search engines. It is known to be a secure and private web browser.

It offers the best combination of performance, support for new Web standards, features, privacy protections and low memory usage. But lately, it seems that its recommended URL autocomplete is up to no good.

Firefox ‘recommended URL autocomplete’ broken

Many users (1, 2, 3, 4) are facing an issue where Firefox is directing them to websites that they have never visited before.

Usually when I type a letter into the address bar, it would suggest previously visited websites. That made it easier to get to websites I wanted to get to. But now, whenever I start typing, it autocompletes websites I’ve never even visited, and shows search suggestions I’ve never searched for.

With recent updates, I’m getting autocomplete suggestions that I have no interest in. For instance, when I am about to go to Reddit, typing in “Re…” gets me “Redbox.” Which isn’t of any interest to me.

It seems that Firefox ‘URL autocomplete’ is broken or not working properly. The issue is troubling users ever since the latest Android update v104.1.0.

Instead of recommending sites that have been previously visited or bookmarked, Firefox is simply directing them to some of the mainstream sites.

Affected users have even tried deleting and removing cookies for the unwanted websites but to no avail.

Official acknowledgment and potential workaround

Fortunately, a member of the Firefox team has acknowledged the issue and said they are working on a fix.

Thank you! I think I have a direction for fixing this and agree that the resulting issue would only show intermittently.

In the meantime, turning off bookmarks seem to fix the problem with Firefox recommending unwanted or most visited websites, according to a Redditor. However, turning it off doesn’t autofill anything at all including the bookmarks.

Hopefully, Mozilla releases a proper fix soon so that users can access bookmarked or previously visited sites without any hassle.

That said, we will report back with more details as and when we get new information to share so stay tuned.

Update 1 (Sept. 27, 2022)

05:03 pm (IST): One of those affected has confirmed that the issue with recommended URL autocomplete has been fixed in the latest v104.2.0.

I have updated to 104.2.0, and I can confirm the problem is fixed for me. Thank you very much! (Source)
