A growing number of users, including some Google Pixel owners, are encountering difficulties accessing the Safe folder within the Files by Google app. Reports suggest that when attempting to open the Safe folder, users are prompted to install a security update. However, the update process appears to stall, leaving those affected stuck on the ‘Install security update’ screen.
This issue has been ongoing since the summer, and despite various workarounds proposed by affected users and community product experts, the problem persists. Users have taken to forums to share their frustration and seek solutions, especially as the Safe folder is designed to provide an added layer of security for sensitive files. The main thread in the official Files by Google community forum from August 2023 has 768 people asking the same question as the original poster, but there’s still no known solution to date.
Last October, nearly two months after the issue was first reported, a product expert claimed that Google was is in the process of migrating a security update related to the Safe folder. This occurs in the background once a user updates their app, and typically, users do not encounter this message as it is executed automatically. However, if a user happens to access it during the migration process, they will see this message. Granted, those affected were advised not to take any action and instead wait, refresh or reopen the app after some time. Unfortunately, this wait has been too long for some users.
Luckily, a glimmer of hope emerged recently from the same product expert in the official community forum, confirming that Google is aware of the bug and actively working on a fix. However, the lack of a specific timeline for the patch only adds to the frustration of users facing this inconvenience. It’s disappointing that a feature introduced to provide Pixel users with additional data security has ironically become a source of stress for many. With their files locked away due to a never-ending update loop, the frustration among Files by Google users is palpable. Notably, the issue isn’t limited to Pixel devices.
The affected users have expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of a concrete timeline for the fix, with many hoping for a prompt resolution to restore normal functionality to the Safe folder. As of now, users are advised to stay tuned to official channels for any updates or announcements.
The ongoing Files by Google Safe folder debacle highlights the critical importance of timely fixes for features designed to protect user data. With their sensitive files currently out of reach and no estimated time of return, users can only hope that Google’s resolution arrives sooner rather than later.
Meanwhile, it’s also worth knowing that Google Files’ Important tab will be going away in February 2024. You can read more about it in this article.
