With the flurry of really good OLED and AMOLED displays on modern smartphones, there has been a push to implement dark mode across Android and iOS, and even incorporate it in apps.

Facebook has been reported to be developing dark mode for its Android app for several months now. However, progress has been relatively slow. We haven’t seen anything substantial other than the occasional leaks here and there.

On Tuesday, Facebook-owned WhatsApp has its beta users get a taste of dark mode. With that, it seems as though the company has been tinkering with the feature and its development was picking pace.

Recent reports according to Android Police, indicate that indeed, Facebook is also gearing up to roll out Dark Mode on its Android app. A number of users have had dark mode work on their devices.

However, this is very much a work in progress and is not even available to that many users. Users also note that the dark mode turns on and off for seemingly no reason whatsoever.

Also worth noting is that Facebook is not opting for a truly black dark mode on its app. This is much like with WhatsApp, which features dark blue accents instead. How much this will be of use to users with OLED displays can only be seen.

Dark Mode on Instagram

The other Facebook-owned social media platform, Instagram has had a proper dark mode on multiple platforms for a while now, and it works well. This, therefore, raises a question of why Facebook is taking its sweet time to implement the same on its dedicated Android app and even on WhatsApp.

At the moment, the only way to access Facebook at night in proper dark mode without searing your eyeballs may be the social network’s newly redesigned mobile web version.
