EA Sports FIFA 20 Global Series registration page leaked players' data

No avid gamer is alien to EA Sports. Their FIFA Soccer series had sold over 260 million copies to find a spot on Guinness World Records. Even though the franchise is facing a significant threat from Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer, Electronic Arts has still got hardcore fans for their FIFA football.

The company releases a new iteration of the game every year. As with almost all sports games, they add the year at the end of the name. Last year, EA Sports FIFA 19 came out. And, we are awaiting the launch of FIFA 20.

Today, EA announced FIFA 20 Global Series. The fans rejoiced at first. They did receive a chance to register for the new game. The amusement soon turned out to become exasperation. In case you happened to sign up, you know exactly what we are talking about.

So, what did go wrong? When a user visited the official page for registration, they could see the details of the last person who completed the process. Irrespective of whether or not your profile is verified, you were prone to this security glitch.

Apparently, EA Sports took down the page after complaints had started flowing in. Within hours, they exposed email, account ID, location, account name and date of birth of many users. Given the number of registered users is unknown, we don’t know the extend of the issue yet.

We could see many tweets related to this issue. Alongside the data breach, many received messages as if other people were trying to log into their accounts. Those who jumped out to join the Global Series have now turned against the company.

People are even planning to sue the firm under GDPR. If you are not aware, General Data Protection Regulation aka GDPR imposes 2% annual revenue penalty, which is about $100 million for EA Sports.
