Original story (published on March 31, 2021) follows:

Google Meet has a huge user base ever since its free version became available to the general public in April 2020.

The video-communication service currently allows users to hold calls with a time limit of 24 hours.

This time limit was due to be reduced to 60 minutes for users of the free version of Google Meet in September 2020.

However, Google pushed the introduction of the 60 minute time limit to end of March 2021 due to the pandemic restrictions.

Now, Google has once again pushed the 60 minute time limit for Google Meet free version users.

The tech giant announced the postponement of the time limit reduction through its official Twitter handle.

This means that users of the free version can enjoy unlimited (24 hours) Google Meet calls till June 2021.

While it is unclear as to why Google has once again pushed the time capping for Google Meet free version users, it sure comes as a surprise for them.

It might be possible that the tech giant might be planning to introduce the reduced time limit at a time when people will start heading out to work.

This in turn might reduce the need of longer Google Meet calls as people will be free to interact physically.

Nevertheless, this is still based on our speculation as Google has not provided any specific reasons for the said extension.

Update 1 (July 13)

Considering we’re past June 28 (the date till when the time limit was extended to 24 hours), many Meet users are now routing to the Google community to inquire if the time limit has been changed.

Addressing the queries, a product expert has given clarity stating the limit was extended during the COVID period. The expert also added:

Google increased the time from 60 mins for quite a while but for countries which workplace individual is available its back to the 60 mins.

All other countries it is still at the increased time.

The limit is based on the version of workspace you are buying(or not buying)

The free version (Standard Gmail account) of meet has a limit of 60 mins in counties you can buy Workspace individual .
