Discord has recently started rolling out the new ‘Pronouns’ feature that allows one to input their preferred pronouns to their profiles or bio.

These can be added to both ‘User Profile’ and ‘Server Profile’, but as of now, the feature is only accessible to a handful of users. However, it appears that some are concerned because of it’s availability.

Discord users concerned over potential abuse of pronouns feature

According to reports (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10), multiple Discord users are concerned about the abuse of recently introduced pronouns feature.

They feel that bad elements can use this feature to present misleading information about their identity or can easily make edgy jokes. And understandably, this can be unsafe for users of the platform, especially minors.

Furthermore, it has been speculated that Discord will not enforce rules against misuse and it’ll be totally upto the server owners or admins to handle such situations.

I hate that the pronouns space on discord will be completely customizable because I already know that white men are going to use it to have some unfunny helicopter joke.

They believe that admins will only set up automod to limit interactions with such profiles. Some even find the feature to be useless as one can put the pronouns they like in the bio.

Some users also do not feel comfortable being addressed by pronouns instead of their actual names.

On the other hand, a section of users is of the view that this is a great change for the platform as one now has an official way, other than roles, to identify themselves.

They also suggest that users should ignore or block those persons who are fraudulent or try to get personal with them.

In addition to this, it has been claimed that by using this feature one can free up space in the ‘about me’ section for server status and other things.

But with only a handful of Discord users able to access the pronouns feature, it remains to be seen what the general reaction will be like once the wider rollout is complete.
