If you’ve ever played a multiplayer game, you’re probably already aware of the terrible gaming experience with a hacker or cheater and how it can ruin your entire day.

Developers therefore continually upgrade their anti-cheat algorithms to identify these cheats as soon as possible in order to deal with this problem.

However, these anti-cheats can be quite intrusive and cause a variety of issues for gamers. We have covered several instances in which they have impacted the player’s experience (1,2,3,4).

Destiny accounts unfairly banned due to new anti-cheat system

Now, due to a new anti-cheat system implemented by Bungie, Destiny and Destiny 2 players are facing an issue where their accounts are being unfairly banned (1,2,3,4,5).

A hacker might purposefully slow down your connection and cause lag in your game using the Net Limiter exploit. But this is being done in a way that benefits a player who uses it during a raid.

According to most reports, bans occur when a player’s network speed drops. So, it seems the new anti-cheat system incorrectly interprets that the player is abusing the Net Limiter exploit and bans them.

This most likely indicates that a common network connection loss was flagged as a cheating symptom, and innocent players unknowingly triggered that throughout the week.

My fiances account was perma banned with no explanation. We tried appealing but just got their usual copy & paste response that it would not be overturned. He doesn’t us any mods or cheats. The only thing that may have contributed is he uses razer synapse to change key bindings, but that’s still not a cheat so I don’t think it would trigger their anti cheat system.

are they still banning people for net limiting? Given my awful internet, and the fact that people have been wrongfully banned because bad internet looks like net limiting, i want to know if it’s safe to log back on.

Although Bungie did overturn these bans for some players who reported to the issue, the vast majority of them remain banned.

A player has also suggested that everyone avoid PvP game modes until Bungie solves the problem.

Official acknowledgment

As it turns out, Bungie has acknowledged the issue and said that they are investigating the error. But there is no timeframe of when the bug will be resolved.

We hope that these unjust bans are lifted as soon as possible so that Destiny and Destiny 2 players may start enjoying the game once again. It is unknown whether or not they will be compensated for this issue.

As always, we will monitor the situation and update this space as soon as we discover more information, so make sure you stay tuned.
