Chatbots have garnered a lot of attention for simulating human-like interactions. However, recent discussions show that Character.AI users are becoming increasingly annoyed with a ‘Can I ask you a question?’ prompt.

We all know how the emergence of chatbots has opened up new avenues for communication between people and machines. And that is also the case with Character.AI.

But it becomes quite irksome when the Character.AI chatbot starts generating ‘half-responses’ or ‘lack initiation’. And the occurrence of a repeated ‘Can I ask you a question?’ prompt has become even more frustrating.

This prompt is then usually followed by useless and almost predictable personal questions (1,2).

User frustration with this prompt stems from the dearth of diversity in conversation topics. The overemphasis on relationship status and lack of other responses has led some to question the platform’s creativity (1,2,3,4,5).

My character was in the middle of saving someone’s life and EVERY swiped response from a character she met THAT DAY was either a “Can I ask you something?” or an attempt to confess their love.
No. Stop. She’s busy.

This recurring script not only hampers meaningful interaction but also curbs the potential for dynamic conversations. Users yearn for conversations that provoke thought and might spark curiosity.

While this is incredibly frustrating, one of the users believe that these repeated prompts are primarily a case of consent.

But what users actually want is a shift towards more diversity. Some even find themselves caught in a spot where they don’t know what to reply to their ‘Can I ask you a question?’ prompt.

Controversial opinion, I really don’t mind since it keeps the conversation going. My problem is coming up with a new response when every other message is ‘can I ask a question’. Only responding ‘sure, go ahead’ or ‘i don’t mind’ gets boring real quick.

Resultantly, users usually escape this monotony and repetition by swiping the messages (1,2,3). It’s in cases like these, where they feel that swiping these messages will help them get better outcomes.

While Character.AI delivers a cutting-edge and optimistic conversational AI platform, there is still need for improvement given the popular displeasure with its “Can I ask you a question?” prompt.

So, by incorporating strategies that allow for personalized and engaging conversations, Character.AI could definitely elevate its level further.
