Baldur’s Gate 3 players have expressed mild discontent over the recent patch addressing the ‘Chest of the Mundane’ glitch.

Many reports (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) have emerged on the game’s official Steam community forum and subreddit concerning this issue.

For a while now, I’ve been carrying all the helpful barrels I’ve been coming across inside of my Chest of the Mundane. Sadly, as of the recent patch, it turns out the weight lowering function was just a bug, and I no longer can use the chest to hold my heavy stuff. (Source)

I just recently got the chest of the mundane in my second playthrough and I think it doesn’t work as before the patch anymore. In the patchnotes it even says something like “fixed a bug where the chest of mundane changes the weight of items”. (Source)

Baldur’s Gate 3 has garnered considerable acclaim as one of the standout RPGs this year.

Beyond its well-constructed narrative and rich character development, the game offers an array of enjoyable equipment and items.

Among them is the ‘Chest of the Mundane’. The in-game description of the chest says that it is the most ‘mundane’ and ‘not special’ item in the game.

However, players soon discovered that this chest held more potential than initially apparent.

Allegedly, the chest had the ability to reduce the weight of stored equipment, enabling players to exceed their character’s weight limit.

Following the latest patch, this function has been reportedly removed, as the reports suggest it wasn’t intended in the first place.

How did ‘Chest of the Mundane’ become useless in Baldur’s Gate 3?

The recent patch clarified that what players had perceived as a deliberate feature was actually an unintended glitch.

With the patch, the glitch was rectified, restoring the ‘Chest of the Mundane’ to its original state.

Now, instead of reducing the item’s weight significantly, it simply adds the item’s weight to the chest’s weight.

So when you put anything in the chest now it still transforms to something lighter but the weight of the original item still gets added to the chest weight. (Source)

I used the chest for inventory management, however when I removed the items from the chest today they stayed as the cutlery they had turned into. The chest also no longer transforms new items placed into it. (Source)

So far, there hasn’t been any official statement regarding the issue.

However, we will closely monitor the situation and provide an update if there are any further developments on the matter.
