[Updated] ASUS ROG Ally 'SD card not working or recognized' issue gets acknowledged, fix in the works

The ASUS ROG Ally is undoubtedly an impressive handheld gaming device that allows one to play a wide range of games from various platforms and libraries.

It also supports FreeSync Premium, which helps eliminate screen tearing and provides a more seamless gaming experience.

Thanks to the device’s innovative cooling solution, heat dissipates effectively, ensuring that you enjoy playing games without thermal throttling. However, not everyone is happy.

According to reports (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8), multiple Asus ROG Ally users are facing an issue where the SD card is not working or being recognized.

They allege that they experienced random freezes and a significant decrease in the device’s performance after inserting the memory card. They also claim to be facing the same problem when using a different memory card.

And to make matters worse, reinstalling the card reader driver or formatting the cards could not help solve their problem. Some even suspected this to be a hardware-related issue and got their units replaced with new ones.

However, the issue was prevalent on the replacement units as well. This is undeniably bad news for all those who are unable to enjoy playing the games installed on their SD Card.

One of those impacted says that even though they can hear the Windows chime indicating that the card is inserted, it doesn’t appear in the file explorer.

Another complains that their 1 TB SD card has not been recognized since they installed the latest patch.

When I insert my micro SD card, you can hear the windows chime indicating it’s inserted, but ot doesn’t appear in my file explorer under this PC. Anyone had this issue?

The issue has been persistent for the past few days and remains unresolved until now. Users are now requesting the company to fix this glitch as soon as possible so that they can access content stored on the memory card.

Fortunately, Asus has officially acknowledged this issue and is currently investigating it. Although no official ETA for the bug fix has been provided.

Luckily, we have come across a potential workaround that might help solve your problem. A Redditor recommends that you install the driver for the SD Card Reader from Intel’s website.

They have discovered that the driver works perfectly and eliminates the freezing and sluggish performance issues as well. They also mention that deriver provided by Asus is intended for 32-bit systems.

However, it is also worth noting that Windows might attempt to update the driver automatically, which could potentially create problems. So, it is advised that you stop Windows from automatically processing driver updates to avoid this.
