For fans of Google Assistant’s light theme, there might be a glimmer of hope on the horizon. The recent user interface (UI) for Assistant with Bard that appeared in an APK teardown, currently in testing, features a light theme, suggesting a potential reversal of Google’s decision to remove the option in late 2022.

Google had initially abandoned support for the light theme on Assistant in late 2022 after the update to Android 13, favoring a default dark mode. The company reiterated its commitment to a consistent dark theme across Android phones, Google TV, and Pixel Watch in February 2023. Despite user requests for the return of the light theme or, at the very least, the option to choose between themes, Google had not shown any signs of revisiting this decision.

“To offer a more helpful visual experience across all your devices, including Pixel Watch and Google TV, when you engage with Assistant on mobile, Light mode is no longer available – it will now have a dark appearance, even if you have Dark theme turned off in your phone settings,” an official statement in the community forum said. However, the appearance of the light theme in the Assistant with Bard pop-up throws a wrench into Google’s seemingly definitive position. While it’s important to remember that this is still under testing and doesn’t guarantee an official rollout, it does signal a possible shift in Google’s thinking.

Google Assistant users have been vocal about their desire for the return of the light theme or at least the option to choose between themes. For some, the light theme is more than just a cosmetic preference. Unlike yours truly, some find dark themes uncomfortable to look at for extended periods. Others with visual impairments may actually benefit from the increased contrast offered by a light theme. Additionally, some users simply prefer the aesthetics of a brighter interface.

But until Google provides an official statement, it remains uncertain whether the light theme will make a comeback. As Assistant with Bard continues to undergo testing, you better temper your expectations and await official communication from Google regarding any potential changes to the virtual assistant’s appearance.
