It looks like things aren’t going smooth for macOS 12 Monterey. Ever since it was released to the General Public on October 25 this year, several bugs and issues have popped up.

While some of these are minor annoyances, others are wreaking havoc and making the system unusable for some. Some issues affecting macOS 12 Monterey include the Finder app bug where multiple PDFs open in preview mode and the USB docking station not working.

As if that wasn’t enough, it has come to light that installing macOS 12 Monterey on older Macs has caused the devices to get bricked. Now, macOS users are reporting (1,2,3,4,5) that they are having issues installing Monterey on their devices with the installer failing while preparing for installation.

The majority of those facing installation issues with macOS 12 Monterey say that they are getting “An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again” error.

This is often followed by an “A required firmware update could not be installed. Compatible internal storage is required in order to update” message.

When upgrading from Big Sur 11.6 to Monterey, the software update launches an installer app which goes through the preparing progress bar prior to restart. At the point where it says “closing applications and preparing to restart…” there’s a popup saying “An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running the application again.” Running the installer again fails at this step.

I cannot upgrade from Big Sur (11.6.1) to Monterey. When attempting to run the installer from the applications folder, it fails to restart and prompts me to launch the application again. So I created a bootable USB using createinstallmedia and that progresses further, but during the restart process, it eventually fails with a “firmware upgrade could not be installed. Compatible internal media …” error message. It then launches the startup disk dialog and I reboot back into Big Sur.

Users say they tried restarting their devices, starting the setup again, and even redownloading the setup but the issue still persists. It is interesting to note that those facing trouble installing macOS 12 Monterey seem to be running a non-Apple SSD.

If you facing the same issue, it looks like you will need to reinstall the original Apple SSD, install macOS 12 Monterey and update the EFI firmware. Then, reinstall the non-Apple SSD and proceed to upgrade to macOS 12 Monterey.

Those who no longer have the original Apple SSD that came with their machine seem to be out of luck right now. It looks like Apple is allegedly aware of the issue and are working on a solution.

The engineers are working on a solution. Lets hope they can figure it out. Maybe in the future, bundling firmware with OS updates will be rethought. Separate, downloadable firmware should be available. There are some updates on their downloads page but the last one for my model MBP was in 2015.
