Designed by Apple Inc., AirPods Pro are wireless in-ear headphones that connect to phones using Bluetooth. First released in 2019, they are Apple’s mid-range headphones that bring in a couple of extra features such as active noise cancellation and IPX4 water resistance.

They use the H1 chip that supports hands-free ‘Hey Siri’ voice command. While they are compatible with all Bluetooth devices, certain functionalities such as device switching are locked to the Apple ecosystem.

Having said that, AirPods Gen 3 users recently complained about hissing and buzzing noises and low volume. And as if that wasn’t enough, many are now saying (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10) that their AirPods Pro are connecting to devices even when in a case.

This is really frustrating for those affected since their headphones lose battery when it’s supposed to not pair and shut down automatically. Many also say that the audio is redirected to their headphones when they are playing audio on their device.

Others say the bug has significantly affected the battery life of the device since it is constantly draining even when in the case.

Users say they tried resetting their AirPods Pro and the Bluetooth connection but to no avail. Here are some reports from those affected by the issue.

My Airpods Pro connect to my Mac regularly while they are in the case. I figured out it’s only the Mac so it has to be something with it’s bluetooth settings, since my iPad just works fine and doesn’t connect to them. I already got new AirPods but the issue is still there. I tried resetting the bluetooth module via sudo pkill bluetoothd but it still occurs (also deleted the bluetooth-config file and restarted several times, also in safe mode)

A little while ago, my AirPods Pro started connecting to my phone at random, while closed. I’ll just be on my phone and I’ll see the notification come down that my AirPods are connected. Or I’ll be driving, and I’ll have to fight my AirPods because they keep disconnecting my phone from my car. This happens so often during a single car ride that every day now, I end up forgetting my AirPods, doing the whole 15-second reset, it’s a mess.

As it turns out, the issue is not completely new with some reports dating back to when the AirPods were first launched. Apple is yet to officially comment on the matter. Many are frustrated and wondering what they can do to fix the issue.

Potential workarounds

Fortunately, we did come across a bunch of workarounds that might help fix the problem at hand.

A bunch of users say cleaning the case with something like an ear swab did the trick for them. Some also suggest cleaning the case charging port since they often have dust between them.

Also, make sure that the Automatic Ear Detection option is checked in AirPods Bluetooth settings.
