Android could soon make it easier for you to know when it’s time to replace your device’s battery, thanks to a new battery health tracking system that’s reportedly in development.

A battery health tracking system could arrive soon on Android

Currently, Android offers details related to your device’s battery life throughout the day but not about battery health. That is, there is no native way to know how much your battery has degraded over time.

There are third-party apps that, after days (or weeks) of analyzing your device usage, can offer you an estimate of the actual current capacity of your battery, although it is possible that this data may also be inaccurate. That said, it seems that Google is developing a native battery health tracking system for Android.

According to Android expert Mishaal Rahman (via Android Authority), the Pixel December Feature Drop included a new ‘Battery information’ section in the OS settings, where the device shows the following data:

  • Battery manufacturing date
  • Charge cycle count.
  • Date of first use.
  • Charging policy.
  • Charging status.
  • Battery Health.

It is thanks to the ‘Health battery’ parameter that you will know the current capacity of your cell compared to its original capacity using a percentage. For example, if your battery is 5,000 mAh and the ‘Health battery’ field shows ‘90%’, it means that the current real capacity is around 4,500 mAh.

Devs working on more data fields for the ‘Battery information’ section

Additionally, the source notes that Google is working on incorporating two other data elements in the ‘Battery information’ section: Part status and Serial number. The latter is basically the unique identifying code of each battery, while Part status will allow you to know if your battery was replaced thanks to three values:

  • ORIGINAL: when the battery is the same as the one that came from the factory.
  • REPLACED: when the battery was replaced.
  • UNSUPPORTED: when it cannot be determined whether the battery was replaced or not.

Finally, although the ‘Battery information’ section is present, it is not yet functional, and you must enable it to access it. Mishaal suggests that we could see a fully functional version of the ‘Battery information’ section in Android 15.
