WhatsApp users are reporting widespread issues with wa.me links, which are commonly used to start chats without saving contacts. The service appears to be down globally, with users encountering HTTP ERROR 429 messages when trying to access any wa.me URL.

The problem first surfaced on Reddit earlier today, when user vertikaldash posted about receiving a 429 error. “I got 429 error when accessing any wa(.)me link, is there any issue,” they wrote in the r/whatsapp subreddit. Other users quickly confirmed they were experiencing the same problem, with one commenter noting they’d “tried different fix. Still the same.”

After seeing these reports, I tested the links myself and couldn’t get them to work either. I even attempted accessing the URLs through VPNs connected to the UK and Singapore, but the error persisted regardless of location. This confirms the issue isn’t regional but a global outage affecting the wa.me service everywhere.

For those unfamiliar, wa.me links are a convenient feature WhatsApp offers that lets users initiate conversations by simply clicking a URL with a phone number attached. Businesses and individuals frequently share these links on websites, social media, and marketing materials because they eliminate the need to manually save a contact before messaging.

The HTTP 429 error typically indicates “Too Many Requests,” suggesting the server is rate-limiting or experiencing overwhelming traffic, though the exact cause remains unclear.

At the time of writing, there aren’t many reports circulating online yet, which suggests this might be a relatively new issue that just started. WhatsApp hasn’t released any official statement acknowledging the problem or providing an estimated timeline for a fix.

With these links embedded in everything from email signatures to Instagram bios, the disruption could significantly impact how companies connect with clients. Users attempting to access these links are met with a frustrating error page instead of the expected WhatsApp chat interface.
