Firefox users unable to view images and videos on X in new carousel layout

It looks like a widespread bug is hitting Firefox users right now, which is stopping them from seeing images and videos that show up in X’s new carousel layout. By carousel, I mean the posts that have more than one image or video bundled together. X recently started rolling out this new layout on mobile and the web, requiring users to swipe to see the remaining images and videos in posts.

I ran into the issue earlier today, and after quickly checking Reddit to see if anyone else had the same issue, I spotted a thread discussing the same thing.

A bunch of posts in the feed have text, but the images or videos that are supposed to be in the carousel do not show up. Instead, vertical lines appear beneath the text.

I did, however, notice that posts with single images or videos worked fine. Here’s a screenshot for reference:

The only difference between the two posts is that one has a single image, while the other has multiple images in the new carousel.

And for the record, I saw this happen on both Firefox 153.0.3 and the newer 153.0.4, so grabbing the latest version isn’t going to save you here.

Also worth noting is that nobody seems to have changed anything on their end, which usually points to something changing on X’s side rather than the browser itself.

That said, someone in the Reddit discussion mentioned that they had the new carousel layout earlier too, but it worked fine then. Things only broke now. Still, one thing is for sure: the new carousel layout is bugged. Possibly due to a backend change that was made in the past few hours.

I also tested X on Chrome, Brave, and Dia, where the issue was not present. So it leads me to believe that X may not have considered the Firefox Gecko engine when making the new carousel layout. This is something that we’ve seen play out when the GTA 6 website animations basically didn’t work on Firefox while running smoothly on Chrome.

For now, there’s no official word from either X or Mozilla. We’ll keep an eye on the situation and post an update when there’s something to share.
