How many times have you installed a new Google Chrome extension, only to spend the next minute hunting for it inside that puzzle-piece menu? I test dozens of browser tools every month, and constantly having to manually pin a newly installed extension to my toolbar has always felt like an unnecessary chore. In fact, many developers actually resort to creating entire onboarding pages just to teach users how to pin their tools.

Thankfully, Google is finally addressing this UI friction. As initially spotted by Windows Report, Chrome is actively testing a new feature that automatically pins newly installed extensions directly to your toolbar.

According to recent Chromium commits, Google is adding a “Pin new extensions” toggle within the chrome://extensions management page. When this feature is active—and it appears it will be enabled by default—any new extension you install will instantly appear on your toolbar, ready for immediate use.

Naturally, not everyone wants a cluttered browser window. If you prefer keeping your workspace pristine, you can simply flick the toggle off. Future installs will then revert to the classic behavior, safely tucking themselves away in the overflow menu.

While Windows Report successfully tested the working toggle in Google Chrome Canary, we checked our Canary builds today and couldn’t trigger the feature. This tells me Google is currently running a limited, server-side A/B test rather than a wide rollout, even within the experimental channel.

The underlying code for this behavior has reportedly been in development since March. As with all Canary experiments, there is no guaranteed timeline for when or if this toggle will graduate to the stable Chrome release. However, for those of us who rely heavily on quick-access tools like password managers, ad blockers, and screenshot utilities, this automatic pinning behavior can’t arrive soon enough.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
