I logged onto Reddit this morning and genuinely thought my browser was failing me. Every single comment I looked at said it was posted “8h ago 8h ago.” If a comment happened to be edited, I was treated to a nice little “Edited 10h ago 10h ago” bonus string.
It looks weird, and here’s a screenshot for reference:
Even other members of our team noticed the same thing on their systems when browsing Reddit. In our testing, we were able to reproduce the issue on Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and even Brave.
Because of what we do here, our first instinct was to blame the browsers. You naturally assume it’s a weird caching issue, a rogue Chromium update, or maybe an adblocker extension breaking the page layout. We spent a good twenty minutes disabling extensions, clearing cookies, and hard-refreshing.
Nothing fixed it.
It turns out your browser is completely fine. This is entirely a Reddit problem. And there are a bunch of threads discussing the visual glitch too.
As pointed out by one commenter, u/kishore_jana, the site’s DOM is literally just rendering the timestamp text twice.
It’s a completely unforced error on the desktop web version. Some users who noticed it pointed out that if you hover over the duplicated times, the left one represents UTC and the right one is your local time. That tells me someone pushed a messy code update to the production site that accidentally prints both variables side-by-side instead of parsing the correct one for the user.
It’s a really silly bug. It doesn’t break any functionality. Nobody is actually going to suffer because they had to read “52m ago 52m ago.” But it makes the entire comment section look broken.
Of course, if you use the iOS or Android app, you won’t see this. Old Reddit is also immune. The glitch is strictly confined to the modern desktop web interface. With how long the glitch has been around and how aggressive Reddit has been about pushing web users toward their mobile apps lately, part of me wonders if they are even testing the desktop site anymore.
So, yes, don’t waste your morning troubleshooting your setup. Your browser is fine. Reddit is just seeing double right now. We’ll update the post if there’s any official word from Reddit or if they fix it silently.
