Earlier this week, we highlighted a rather frustrating drag-and-drop bug plaguing Brave browser users. The glitch essentially broke the ability to easily drag and drop some images into the browser, a seemingly small feature that severely disrupted daily workflows for countless people. But as we dug deeper into the growing pile of user reports, it quickly became apparent that Brave wasn’t the sole culprit.

The bug actually stems from the underlying Chromium engine. This means that if you use Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Vivaldi, Opera, Brave, or any other Chromium-based browser, you might be pulling your hair out over the exact same glitch.

If you’ve been struggling to drag and drop some images into your browser tabs recently, we bring you some excellent news. Working together, Google and Microsoft developers have officially squashed the bug, and a permanent fix is already making its way down the pipeline.

Tracking the progress on the Chromium issue tracker, we can see that developers jumped on the problem. While the drag-and-drop failure still stubbornly persists in current public releases (such as version 149.0.7827.54), its days are definitively numbered. The Chromium engineering team has successfully verified the patch on Chrome Canary build v151.0.7881.0, testing it thoroughly across both macOS 26.5 and Windows 11 environments.

So, when can you expect your web browser to start behaving normally again? Very soon.

The fix is already live if you are using the bleeding-edge Canary channel. More importantly, developers are actively executing merge requests (Cherry Picks, or CPs) to push this patch to the broader Beta and Stable channels.

Providing an update on the progress, a Microsoft developer in the Chromium issue tracker noted:

Essentially, this confirms that the development team isn’t making users wait for a massive future overhaul to get this functionality back. They are actively injecting the fix into the next immediate Stable update (M149) and Beta update (M150) across all Chromium browsers.

Whether you rock Chrome, Brave, or Edge, your only job right now is to keep an eye on your pending updates. Once your browser downloads the next stable release and prompts you to restart, that pesky drag-and-drop nightmare will finally be a thing of the past.

Tech has been my playground for over a decade. While the Android journey began early, it truly took flight with the revolutionary Lollipop update. Since then, it's been a parade of Android devices (with a sprinkle of iOS), culminating in a mostly happy marriage with Google's smart home ecosystem. Expect insightful articles and explorations of the ever-evolving world of Android and Google products coupled with occasional rants on the Nest smart home ecosystem.
