Proton VPN has officially acknowledged an issue affecting its Firefox browser extension. The company confirmed that the extension is temporarily unavailable on Firefox because of a review requirement from Mozilla.
Reports of problems with the Proton VPN extension surfaced in the r/ProtonVPN subreddit, and users were complaining that the extension would get stuck on a loading circle, preventing access to features such as split tunneling. Interestingly, the underlying VPN connection itself reportedly remained active.

Subsequently, users discovered that the extension had also disappeared from Mozilla’s Add-ons store. Attempts to access the page returned a “Page not found” error, suggesting the extension had been temporarily pulled from the store. While existing installations of the extension may continue operating normally, fresh installs seemingly don’t.

I’ve opened the official link for the ProtonVPN extension on Firefox, and can confirm that it returns an error at the time of writing.

According to Proton’s official statement on X, core VPN functionality is still available through the desktop app. Moreover, the extension is still fully functional in Chromium-based browsers. In the meantime, you can consider using a different browser until the issue is resolved.

Several workarounds have been discussed in the community. If you’re in the know, you can manually build and sideload the .xpi file from Proton’s GitHub repository. This is only for power users, since simply using the desktop client is a far easier solution for most others.

While Proton has been largely responsive on socials, it’d be good to have an ETA for the fix. It doesn’t help that Firefox extension review queues are obnoxiously long, so users are stuck waiting with no word on when the issue will be solved.

For now, you can monitor Proton’s official support channels on X or Reddit, and keep an eye on Mozilla’s Add-ons page for when the extension returns.
