After updating to Vivaldi 8.0, complaints about active tabs began swelling up. Thankfully, the company is aware of several issues/regressions with tabs, and they’re actively working on them.

Ever since the latest update dropped, Reddit is filled with complaints about tab behavior on the browser. You can find some examples in the images below. This is the primary complaint — Vivaldi is just ignoring “New tab position” settings, and this forces users to scroll a lot more to reach their desired tabs.

Vivaldi staff promptly responded on Reddit, acknowledging the bug. It’s a known bug that’s actively being looked into, so users can expect a fix soon. However, no official timeline for the fix was provided in the replies.

Another user complained about bugs with the mouse gesture opening links outside of the tab stack, and PDFs also opening outside the tab stack. The same Vivaldi staff responded that these are known bugs as well, and linked to an article that elaborates on all the current issues.

One of Vivaldi’s employees wrote a full-length article summarizing the issues with tabs on the browser after the 8.0 update.

It claims that a significant back-end rewrite is the root cause of these issues, and simplifying the code may have caused tabs to behave incorrectly. Additionally, the post contains a list of issues that have been fixed and issues that are still ongoing.

There are bugs with child stacks, stacks with “After active tab” and “As Last Tab,” etc., don’t open correctly, the duplicated tab position isn’t respected, the Active Tab setting doesn’t work when opened from an external app, “Open tabs in current stack” doesn’t work, and more.

Since the company is aware of most bugs with tabs, we can expect a fix to roll out in the coming versions. Do keep an eye out for new versions of Vivaldi under Help -> Check for Updates.
