Reddit already offers several comment sorting options, such as Best, Top, and New. Now, users are noticing another feature placed next to filters, called “Conversation Highlights.”

People spotted this and shared it on Reddit. The icon next to the text indicates that the feature uses AI to automatically show the most relevant comments or just summarize the most relevant ones. However, the feature doesn’t work at the moment. You can find more reports here, here, and here.

If you click on the button, it just says “Unable to create highlights.” This indicates that Reddit is still testing out the feature, and it’s not available for everyone yet. In our tests, Conversation Highlights isn’t available on both the web app and mobile app. We also haven’t found a report that demonstrates a working demo.

Some people are noticing that it’s showing up on large threads with hundreds of comments. It’s actually useful in such situations, since users don’t have to scroll through so many comments to understand the gist of the discussion.

Reactions to this test were mixed. Some people already want an option to turn it off, while others think it’s a smart way of saving time. People also don’t want Reddit to get rid of the existing sorting methods in favor of Conversation Highlights. The usual concerns of trusting an AI for convenience still persist.

Reddit comment reactions.

Some people speculate that the feature uses Gemini, since the icon somewhat resembles the Gemini logo. Since Reddit Answers is also powered by Gemini AI, it’s fair to assume that other AI features on the platform would also use Gemini. However, this isn’t confirmed.

It’s worth noting that Reddit hasn’t officially announced this feature anywhere, and the only sources are the posts we’ve found online.

In other Reddit news, the company is rolling out the Liquid Glass toolbar to a wider pool of users on iOS. We covered that here.
