TikTok is tightening rules for business accounts, sparking confusion over the exact verification requirements as personal accounts are also getting caught in the crossfire.

As reported on Reddit, the company has seemingly begun enforcing stricter verification for Business Accounts, particularly those tied to advertising, analytics, and the TikTok Shop. The platform has recently updated its policies to require verification for access to these advanced features.

However, some reports on X claim that shifting back to a Personal Account from a Business Account also requires verification now, which is odd, since other accounts were reportedly notified that failing to verify as a business would convert the account back into a Personal Account. You can find similar reports here, here, and here.

Why are people running personal accounts still getting verification prompts? That’s likely a glitch. For some people, it has swapped back automatically.

TikTok personal profile issue.

If you’re still affected, I was able to find a workaround in Reddit comments. All you need to do is sign up for TikTok Ads Manager on the desktop site, just verify your email (ignore the business fields), and it should bypass the remaining verification fields, allowing you to use your account normally again.

Earlier in 2026, TikTok officially phased out “Custom Identity” options for ads, mandating verified profiles for transparency reasons. Advertisers could no longer run ads without linking to an official account. Verified accounts unlock features such as better analytics, commercial music access, etc. The new standard requires all ads on the app to be tied to a verified identity.

Verification requires submitting official documents, such as business registration papers, EIN confirmation letters, government IDs, SSNs, etc.

Some businesses have reportedly been sent “May 22, 2026” as the deadline for completing verification, after which unverified accounts may lose access to advanced features. However, TikTok doesn’t publicly mention this date anywhere. It only shows up within the TikTok app.

Feature restrictions for unverified accounts seem to have already started, since one post on X notes that their TikTok Shop account was deactivated following a rejection of the appeal.

It’s worth noting that not all TikTok users are affected by this change in policies. Personal Accounts, Organic Creators, and Non-Commercial Accounts (accounts not running any ads or using TikTok Shop, accounts not advertising brands in their Bio, etc) don’t have to submit any verification documents or SSNs, unless they’ve switched to Business mode manually/enabled monetization features on the platform.
