CHAI users are running into a new character limit on their outgoing messages, and it’s pretty rough. Based on reports piling up on multiple Reddit threads, the cap sits at roughly 330 characters, which is barely enough for a few lines of text on mobile.
The new limitation quickly started being discussed on the r/Chai_Unofficial subreddit, where a few users managed to confirm that the exact character limit seems to be 330.
One commenter shared a screenshot of a response they received from CHAI’s support team via email, which essentially confirmed the change is intentional. According to the email, the app is currently running tests on chat history, bots displayed in the chat feed, improvements to the bot creation process, and chat word limits. It said the changes may be temporary, though many users are skeptical.
The frustrating part about this limitation is that even subscribers who have the Ultra plan are stuck with it. Multiple users in separate threads confirmed their subscriptions offer no relief from the limit. “I pay for Ultra not to have these problems,” wrote one user. Another said they cancelled their subscription immediately after confirming it was not a bug.
For the roleplay community on CHAI specifically, 330 characters is a hard sell. Detailed scene-setting, reminding the bot of character context, explaining ongoing storylines, all of that requires more than a few sentences. Several users noted that even Discord without a paid plan offers more room.
One user called it “crazy” to be on the highest subscription tier and still face a word limit, especially when the bot’s own responses don’t appear to have the same restriction. That said, they also mentioned that they saw a post claiming that the support team told them to split responses in half. However, that may have likely been a comment that shared what appears to be an edited image.
At least a few users have started hunting for alternatives, with names like Janitor AI, Seasoul, and Character.AI coming up in the replies. Most said none of them fully replace CHAI, but the frustration seems to be reaching a tipping point.

This isn’t the only aggressive change CHAI made recently. Just weeks ago, we covered a massive user backlash when CHAI deleted old chat histories without warning, triggering a similar wave of subscription cancellations. That said, following the immense backlash, the platform eventually started restoring and extending chat history.
So maybe, just maybe, if enough users push back against the limit, the platform might consider raising the character limit more.
For now, Chai has not posted any public announcement addressing the text limit directly. We’ll update the article if and when there are any further developments.
