TikTok just started slapping forced AI-generated summaries onto user videos, and people are absolutely hating it. Instead of just expanding a caption when you tap the screen, the app now throws open a huge AI Overview explaining the clip.

Judging by the number of posts piling up on Reddit, X, and TikTok itself, it seems like a massive wave of accounts have been hit with the new feature. And of course, people are desperately trying to figure out how to disable the AI Overviews.

TikTok appears to be scraping video content and text to guess what a post is about. And it is getting things wildly wrong. One user on X pointed out that the AI completely hallucinated details about their video. They called the forced AI integration a massive headache.

A quick search on X also reveals dozens of posts appearing one after the other. Most, if not all, of which criticize the unwanted addition to the app.

Meanwhile, a lengthy thread in the TikTok subreddit is packed with users venting about how intrusive the change is. According to one commenter, the app is quickly becoming unusable. They pointed to the recent terms of service update, new AI remix tools, and now these overviews as proof the platform is losing its way.

People just want to read the original captions written by creators. Instead, they are getting blocky AI text that blocks comments and ruins the viewing experience.

Users are hunting for an off switch. In another Reddit discussion, someone suggested a potential workaround. They said going to the app settings, tapping Playback, and toggling off “display object tags” made the AI overviews disappear. But a commenter noted that it didn’t work.

Based on my own observation, it seems the feature is rolling out widely in the US first. One TikTok user who uploaded a video complaining about the overviews noted in the comments that they managed to turn it off. How did they do it? By using a VPN set to a Canadian server.

If this does work, then it strongly suggests TikTok is testing the waters in certain regions before a global push, with the US likely first in line.

That said, TikTok seems to be taking a leaf out of Meta’s playbook with this. The company has baked Meta AI into various sections of Instagram, including chats, the explore page, and the comments section, where it automatically suggests relevant searches on some videos, providing you with additional details about the subject or the creator.

Tech companies seem determined to shove AI into every possible corner of their apps. Users keep pushing back. For now, TikTok is just the latest platform to ignore what its audience actually wants.
