Netflix is officially sending out emails to notify subscribers about its latest round of price increases. The new rates push the Premium 4K plan to a hefty $26.99 a month before taxes.
The Standard ad-free plan now costs $19.99, up two dollars from its previous price. Even the cheapest ad-supported tier is going up a dollar to $8.99 a month.
Fees for adding extra viewers outside your household are also climbing.
The hike was confirmed by Netflix in late March and was first spotted by Android Authority. Now the actual billing notices are hitting inboxes, and subscribers are not taking the news well.
Some long-time users are receiving a rather tone-deaf thank-you email. The message praises their years of loyalty right before slapping them with the new, higher bill.
In another massive Reddit thread, subscribers are threatening to cancel their accounts entirely.
Many argue the service simply does not justify a near $30 monthly charge once local taxes are factored into the $26.99 Premium plan.
The threads have discussions around the perceived drop in content quality. The company’s habit of cancelling original shows after a single season is also a major sticking point for people who are now being asked to pay more.
Someone in the comments even pointed towards a recent report by Forbes, which highlighted how Netflix might be intentionally making its ad-free subscription seem like a bad deal and instead making its ad-supported plan a better choice for users. With that, Netflix can bag cash from subscribers and advertisers too.
That said, Netflix is obviously not the only platform asking for more cash right now. We just saw YouTube quietly raise its Premium prices in the US to $15.99 a month for individual accounts.
Streaming costs are creeping back up to the old cable TV prices everyone originally tried to escape. Netflix is likely betting that most people will complain online but ultimately keep their accounts active.
