Some YouTube users on iPhones and iPads are suddenly seeing a weird video filter they didn’t ask for.

Over the last few days, dozens of people have complained that videos in the iOS app look completely blown out. Viewers are seeing weird white halos around high-contrast edges and text.

According to a post on the YouTube subreddit, faces with beards or detailed line art look especially terrible right now. Some are calling the videos basically unwatchable.

It is not entirely clear if this is a bug or a quiet test gone wrong. From what I was able to deduce, Google might have silently pushed an aggressive AI sharpening tool via a server-side test. But of course, this is just speculation.

Still, people are pretty annoyed with the sudden change. One viewer pointed out that the update is also causing their device to heat up significantly while watching.

Another frustrated iPad user mentioned it looks like a sharpening setting was cranked way past its limit.

The issue seems locked exclusively to the iOS and iPadOS applications. If you open YouTube in a standard mobile browser, the videos look completely normal.

I didn’t notice the same problem on my iPhone with the latest YouTube version on the App Store, v21.17.3. This update rolled out a few hours ago, so it might be worth installing to see if the issue persists or not.

If you are stuck on an older version and waiting for a fix, the browser workaround is your best bet for now. Some people tried digging into the desktop settings to disable video enhancements, but that did not fix the mobile app problem.

YouTube has not officially acknowledged the complaints. The automod on the subreddit simply advised users to submit a standard bug report.
