Facebook users who access the platform on the desktop are logging in only to find that the right-hand friends sidebar is completely gone.

According to the timeline of reports online, it seems like the issue started surfacing over the last few days. It leaves people entirely unable to see which of their contacts are online without actively opening the separate Messenger page.

One user on Reddit pointed out that the chat sidebar mysteriously vanished. The thread is full of people realizing they lost the feature too. You can find similar bug reports scattered across other active threads here and here.

The missing panel affects people using Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Edge. It even happens in private browsing windows.

Some users initially blamed their ad blockers or browser extensions, but disabling them does absolutely nothing to bring the friends list back.

That said, reports are not limited to Reddit. People are even discussing the problem on Facebook itself. One post from a confused user simply asks if anyone else is missing their friends list. It immediately drew comments from others staring at the exact same blank space. You can spot more direct complaints floating around here and here.

This, however, doesn’t seem to be impacting everyone, judging by the pace at which reports have been coming in. In fact, in my brief testing, I was able to see the friends list on the right-hand side on Chrome and Dia. P.S. Both had ad-blockers enabled too.

There is some chatter online that Meta is preparing a major redesign. A cleaner, streamlined feed is reportedly in the works for desktop users. Hiding the traditional right-hand sidebar would definitely fit that visual overhaul by reducing clutter.

If this is an intentional design choice, it is a pretty bad move. People still use the desktop version of Facebook specifically to see who is currently active. Forcing users to dig through messages just to check online status makes the site noticeably less useful.

We will just have to wait and see if the company acknowledges the missing panel or quietly leaves it broken.
