Duolingo for Schools is reportedly set to shut down next year. Teachers have received emails announcing that the service will end on July 31, 2027.

A screenshot of the email was shared by u/ghostkittenwhisperer through a post on Reddit. The email says that Duolingo is grateful for the support through all these years, but Duolingo for Schools did not see satisfactory levels of use. As a result, they’re discontinuing the service. They further emphasize that the regular Duolingo app will remain available for students and teachers.

You can read the whole email announcement below:

Duolingo for Schools provided classroom management tools on top of the regular app, offering progress tracking, an ad-free experience, and more for students and teachers. There were assignment options and visibility into student activity. It was released back in 2015, so it’s sunsetting after over a decade.

Since the tool was quite useful, a lot of people reacted with disappointment. People highlighted the value it offered for ELL beginners (English Language Learners), calling it a great resource. Many users express frustration over losing the ad-free classroom setup, linking this change to a heavier focus on profits.

User reactions to DFS shutdown.

A few people saw this shutdown coming a couple of years ago, pointing to some prior changes, such as removing content-specific assignments and the Classes feature.

Duolingo did not mention anything about a new management dashboard or an equivalent tool that teachers can use.

It’s worth noting that Duolingo did not officially post a blog or social media announcement about the shutdown at the time of this writing. The only source of this information remains the emails that some users received.

While it’s unfortunate to see Duolingo for Schools closing down next year, you can try alternatives such as Rosetta Stone or Mango Languages.
