Google has started rolling out Android 17 QPR1 Beta 1, giving Pixel users and developers the first quarterly beta update after the initial Android 17 release. The new build arrives as CP31.260403.005.A1, carries the April 2026 security patch, and includes Google Play services version 26.11.36.

With this release, Google Pixel users on the latest Android 16 stable build who were unable to switch to Android 17 Beta 4 can finally upgrade to the latest Android 17 Beta via OTA update.

As is usually the case with Quarterly Platform Releases, this update is less about major new app-facing API changes and more about platform stability, bug fixes, and improvements that will eventually feed into future Pixel Feature Drops. Google also notes that, unlike preview builds for unreleased Android versions, QPR beta releases are generally suitable for everyday use. Humanity remains committed to testing software in public, but at least this time it is the relatively safer kind.

According to the official release notes, Android 17 QPR1 Beta 1 fixes four notable issues affecting printing, audio behavior, and system responsiveness.

One of the more practical fixes addresses a Default Print Service crash that occurred when a printer reported low ink conditions. That bug could prevent users from finishing print jobs altogether, so anyone who ran into failed print attempts under those conditions should benefit from this patch.

Google has also resolved an issue involving the Terminal app, which could trigger an Application Not Responding (ANR) error severe enough to make both the app and the device become unresponsive.

Another important fix targets VoIP audio quality. Google says it resolved a problem where uncontrollable hardware audio processing on the voice communication path caused distortion and phase cancellation in voice calling apps. In plain terms, this should improve call clarity in affected VoIP apps, especially in scenarios where audio processing was interfering with the original voice signal.

The fourth listed fix addresses a more technical audio issue where direct audio output could fail to open on devices using the AIDL audio HAL when playing audio streams longer than five seconds. While this is not the sort of bug most people would describe that way, it is still an important backend fix that could affect media playback behavior under certain hardware and software configurations.

For those interested in installing the update manually, Google has already published factory images, OTA images, and GSI files for Android 17 QPR1 Beta 1 on the Android Developers site.
