Update 23/04/26 – 09:01 am (IST): Some users are reporting that uninstalling the app and then reinstalling brings back the GIF button. In my retest, I managed to reproduce the same bug with version 558.1.0. However, after a quick uninstall and reinstall of Messenger, the GIF button came back.
Meanwhile, another reader reached out, noting that they quit the app, updated it, then restarted their device, and the GIF button showed up again. So give these two potential workarounds a shot and let me know if they helped in the comments below.
Thanks for the heads up, Stu!
Original article published on April 22, 2026, follows:
Some Facebook Messenger users on iPhone say the app has suddenly lost its built-in GIF option. Reports about the issue have started surfacing on X and Reddit in the past few hours.
The first signs seem to have come from a Reddit post in r/facebookmessenger, where one user said they went to send a GIF in the iOS app and found the option missing entirely. In the replies, others said the same thing was happening on their side too, which at least suggests this is not just one odd account glitch.
A second thread pointed to the same problem, this time with a screenshot showing Messenger’s media panel offering AI stickers and the sticker store, but no GIF button at all.
Over on X, a couple of users were saying much the same thing, one asking where their Messenger GIFs had gone and another wondering whether GIF search had been removed.
For now, the reports are still very fresh. That makes it hard to say whether this is a widespread Messenger bug, a bad rollout, or one of those messy account-level issues that only hits a smaller batch of users.
In my testing on an iPhone 16 running the latest iOS 26.5 beta, I was able to access GIFs just fine.
That does not rule out a real problem, obviously. One Reddit commenter said updating the app did not help, and claimed one friend was seeing the same issue while another person with a brand new iPhone could still use the feature.
There is also some history here. Older user reports from Apple Support Communities and Reddit show Messenger’s GIF option has disappeared for some iOS users before, including complaints in 2021 and again in 2025, so this is not an entirely new kind of breakage.
Still, reports have only just begun surfacing today, so it is too early to speculate on the exact reasons for the issue.
We’ll be on the lookout for any further developments and will update the article accordingly. Meanwhile, feel free to drop a comment below to let us know if you’re experiencing the same problem or not.
