Grok’s Threads debut gets ugly as users tell Elon Musk’s AI to “stay in your lane”

xAI’s Grok just showed up on Meta’s Threads, and users are not happy about it. The @grok account posted a fashion video featuring a creator who uses Grok to find outfits and styling tips. Pretty normal, right? Well, Threads users seem to want no part of it.

The replies under the post are mostly negative. “Are you drunk? This is the wrong platform lil bro,” one user wrote. Another lashed out, “Get fu***d.” Someone else brought up the MechaHitler incident, writing, “MechaHitler isn’t welcome here, Elon. Be gone.”

Grok only has one post on the account so far. It is unclear if this is a quiet test or the start of xAI’s expansion of Grok onto other social media platforms. 

The hostile reception makes some sense. Threads built up a user base that largely migrated away from X, and a lot of those people have little patience for anything tied to Musk. So it’s obvious that a branded fashion promo was never going to be a soft landing.

The baggage Grok is carrying into this does not help either. Late last year, the AI was caught generating explicit images of women without their consent on X. In March, xAI locked Grok Imagine behind a paid subscription, stripping a feature that had been free. Neither episode did much for public trust in the product.

It is also worth noting that AI chatbot controversies are not exclusive to Grok. ChatGPT was also in the spotlight earlier this month after it directed a racial slur at a user during a music search.

Whether Meta had any role in Grok’s arrival on Threads or if xAI simply created the account on its own is not clear yet. That said, given the poor reception, xAI might just drop the idea.
