It seems like Grok Imagine could soon be getting a sweet video quality boost. App researcher Nima Owji spotted evidence in the app suggesting that Grok Imagine will soon let users generate or upscale videos to 1080p, which would be a meaningful jump from what’s currently on offer.

Right now, Grok Imagine tops out at 720p, and even that is locked behind a SuperGrok subscription. Free users are capped at 480p, but there’s a separate option to upscale the quality.

The screenshot showing the upcoming feature lists it simply as “Upscale to 1080p” under the Features section in the video menu, alongside other video generation options like Extend.

Owji’s post pulled over 58,700 views pretty quickly, and Elon Musk himself replied with a “Try it out,” which essentially confirms xAI is aware is going to release this very soon.

That said, it’s worth noting that native 1080p output and 1080p upscaling aren’t the same thing. Natively generating a file at a higher resolution almost always produces sharper and more accurate details. Stretching a 480p or 720p render up to 1080p can sometimes look like a smoothed-over rough draft. Still, we’ll just have to wait and see how it works once it goes live.

There is also the ongoing debate about raw quality and consistency. A few replies under the leak noted that Grok Imagine still struggles with basic prompt adherence when asked to edit specific elements.

One user pointed out that the tool sometimes does something completely random during edits. They argued that true game-changing status will only happen when Grok reaches Adobe Premiere levels of editing control.

Competitors like Seedance 2.0 are still widely considered the heavyweights in the space. A bump in resolution alone will not close that gap if the underlying video generation model still spits out weird artifacts.

Still, this is a necessary step forward for the platform. Grok Imagine has picked up several new features, including the option to extend videos, generate 10-second clips, and more. Musk also recently hinted at a Professional mode that will come to the platform.

Giving people a way to export cleaner footage is just the logical next piece of the puzzle. We just have to wait for xAI to flip the switch.
