Pixel users are reporting ongoing issues with Android Auto, including failures with physical buttons and rotary controls following the March update. The physical back button triggers a black screen on the main display area. For vehicles that don’t have full touch controls, it results in unresponsive knobs.

The screen also freezes when switching between apps like Maps and YouTube Music. It’s worth noting that these problems mostly occur in vehicles that rely on knobs or buttons, rather than touch screens.

The bug primarily hits Mazda models, but also affects a few Audi models. The devices affected are mostly Pixel phones, on both wired and wireless connections. The key issue is physical controls randomly freezing up.

A few people say the performance is better with a wired connection, but physical controls still fail. Wireless connections also keep crashing. We covered more about that here.

When the March 2026 security update first rolled out, initial coverage focused mostly on general Android Auto instability, largely missing the specific physical control and back-gesture bugs we are seeing now.

This makes Android Auto unreliable and difficult to use. Common fixes included force-rebooting the car’s infotainment unit or resetting Bluetooth/Wi-Fi. None of them seems to provide a permanent solution. Holding down the Music, Nav, and Back buttons simultaneously (a standard hard-reset shortcut for Mazda infotainment systems) is another suggestion you can try.

The issue was forwarded in the official Android Auto community thread, and for the March update, Google did acknowledge the reports and invited affected users to submit formal bug reports. As of mid-April 2026, no fix has been released, and Google didn’t provide an official estimated time for the fix.
