X has started rolling out Voice Notes in XChat, and the feature is already showing up on iOS, Android, and the web.

The audio messaging feature dropped today after months of being MIA. X quietly pulled voice memos in an earlier update, leaving plenty of users annoyed. Now they’re back for everyone.

The company confirmed the addition in an official post from the XChat account. It was then further amplified by X’s product lead, Nikita Bier, with a quote post.

One user even shared a short screen recording showing the feature working in the iOS app.

“People who hate typing are going to love this,” one replied under the announcement post. Others jumped in with their own takes, from excitement about leaving their first voice note to mild complaints that it took this long.

This fits the bigger picture for XChat. The service started out as a beefed-up replacement for X’s old DMs. It got its own standalone website late last year, which we reported on here. Then, in March, the company pushed a dedicated iOS app into beta testing, and voice notes were already on the roadmap at that point.

Unlike a lot of feature releases that go live in small batches, this appears to be a wide release. You should already be able to use the feature. Just open any chat and tap the voice note button, which should be on the right-hand side of the Message box.

With this, X is slowly bringing the XChat experience on par with standalone messaging apps, rather than treating it as an afterthought.

I cover fast-moving stories across apps, online platforms, and everyday tech — phones, wearables, consoles, and whatever else people are fighting with this week. Bugs, rollouts, scams, policy enforcement, and the occasional internet-culture rabbit hole are all fair game. My goal is simple — make confusing tech news readable.
