There are some posts on X and Reddit that Instagram is now allowing users to follow more than 7500 people. A post on Reddit notes that the user was able to follow 7539 accounts, which is clearly over the apparent limit. Others have also observed that some accounts now have a following count of over 10K.

Reddit discussion on Instagram follow limit.

To this day, Instagram does not officially permit you to follow more than 7500 people on the app. This is an effort to reduce spam on the platform. As mentioned on Instagram’s support page, the only people who are currently able to follow more than 7500 accounts did so before this rule was introduced.

It’s worth noting that Instagram has neither issued an official statement nor updated the support page. However, given the posts online, there’s still a chance that the company silently increased the limit. Assuming the limit has truly been increased, we don’t exactly know what the new limit is.

People are happy that they no longer have to unfollow people every day to stay within the limit. It’s not necessary to constantly check the following list for inactive accounts, if this is an update to the rule and not just a bug. It’s unlikely to be accounts that followed more than 7500 before the rule, because these reports are fairly new.

A screenshot shared on Reddit shows an account that only has 131 followers, but follows over 10,000 people. There’s no exact timeline on when this change was seemingly made, but one user claims that it was changed this Monday. They apparently got the “Follow limit” error message on Sunday, but Instagram began permitting them to follow more people from Monday.

If this is indeed an actual change, it’s definitely welcome. It’s good for businesses to interact with their followers more, and it’s especially useful for celebrities and creators who want to interact more with fans.

Given that Instagram has recently begun rolling out the Plus subscription with a lot more advanced tools, an update to the maximum number of people you can follow would be right in line. If you were able to follow more than 7500 people on the app, do let us know in the comments.
