Update 29/03/26 – 05:51 pm (IST): A Redditor has now shared an email from CHAI support that reportedly links the new subscription prompt to regional restrictions, suggesting the change was introduced to keep the app accessible in areas that may otherwise face full blocks. That broadly lines up with earlier Reddit posts showing CHAI has already restricted free usage in some regions and pushed affected users toward paid access.

However, the message does not appear to offer any firm timeline for a fix, and instead says the company is still monitoring the impact and may make further adjustments.

Original article published on March 28, 2026, follows:

Users of the CHAI app are facing a new problem, where a “Message Limit” pop-up appears while having a conversation. People who open the chat suddenly see the restriction prompt block their conversations. Those who have “unlimited access” have the same issue as well. In regions where free messages was promised earlier, the same message limit pop-up appears.

The issue is not isolated to one country. People in the US, Poland, Canada, and even India have the same issues. The prompt asks people to get a paid plan to continue the conversation. It explicitly mentions “…you must subscribe to continue,” if the Message Limit pop-up doesn’t go away even after one day. This implies that CHAI might severely restrict or end free chatting soon.

Updating the app solves the issue for some lucky users, and we could infer that it’s a bug based on this information. However, others say that the latest version of the app still has the same message limits. Reinstalling the app doesn’t seem to work here either. A comment on Reddit claims that the brand may have mandated a subscription to continue chatting.

People are blaming greedy developers for this, since the app wasn’t this bad before. A lot of people threaten to delete the app and quit if the issues continue. In fact, this isn’t the first time users have faced such limitations on CHAI. Last month, users reported a similar “Token Limit” blocking conversations.

Unlimited chats were working perfectly fine before, and people are frustrated about continuously being pushed to pay more. We don’t know whether this is just a bug or the beginning of the rollout of new limits for the free tier. Developers were not very clear on this, and no official response exists at the time of writing.

Since a lot of users are either deleting the app or turning to rival chatting tools, it’s best if CHAI issues a statement regarding what the new limits are, since a lack of clarity to even paying customers can get rather annoying.
