For people who spend a good chunk of their day commuting, Android Auto is an absolute necessity, especially for staying caught up on messages without taking your eyes off the road. But lately, a highly frustrating bug is making that nearly impossible for WhatsApp users.
Over the last few days, I’ve been tracking a growing number of complaints across Reddit and Google’s official support forums regarding WhatsApp voice notes failing to play correctly on Android Auto.
Based on my dive into the reports, the issue seems closely tied to the recent Android Auto version 16.4.661034, though it might be affecting slightly older builds too. When users receive a voice note on WhatsApp and tap “play aloud,” the system simply announces that the message contains an audio attachment but refuses to play the actual audio through the car speakers.
Here is how the bug typically manifests:
- The visual playback bar moves, but there is absolutely no sound.
- The audio plays out of the phone’s native speakers instead of the car’s sound system.
- The assistant simply states, “The message contains an audio file,” and stops.
"Since last update of Android Auto... WhatApp Voice Messages were not played via car speakers. It only says 'the message contains an audio file'. Already restarted the phone, cleared the AA cache but nothing helps." — Frustrated user on Google Support Forums

Users have tried all the standard troubleshooting steps, including clearing caches for WhatsApp, Android Auto, and the Google App, changing Bluetooth MAP protocols, and reinstalling apps, but nothing has provided a permanent fix. Interestingly, voice notes from other messaging apps like Telegram seem to be working perfectly fine, isolating this issue directly to the WhatsApp and Android Auto handshake.
Is a fix on the way? Fortunately, yes. A Google Community Specialist has actively responded to the forum threads, noting that the Android Auto team is already looking into the issue and reaching out to affected users for diagnostic data.

Hopefully, a server-side patch or a quick app update will resolve this soon, because having to pick up your phone to hear a voice note entirely defeats the purpose of Android Auto.
