Amazon’s Kindle 5.19.2 update is starting to look like a pretty bad one for at least some users, with complaints piling up around battery drain, broken fonts, manga formatting, and changes to basic reading tools.

The firmware update was meant to be a general bug-fix update for most Kindle models, with more specific additions centered on Kindle Scribe features such as cloud import options and Alexa+ note sharing. But it seems like there were some other changes that have left many users frustrated.

In one of the bigger recent threads on Reddit, a Colorsoft Signature user said the update effectively “ruined” the device for Japanese reading by making word lookup, sentence translation, and dictionary switching unreliable, which is not a small complaint when those are the whole reason someone bought into the Kindle ecosystem in the first place.

The reports are not limited to one post, either. Users in this thread, this one, this one, this one, and this one are all describing some version of the same thing: a firmware update that changed behavior in ways they did not ask for and, in some cases, made the device harder to use.

A few of the complaints are especially notable. Some users say embedded fonts in sideloaded books have stopped rendering properly. Others say sideloaded manga and comics now have ugly margins, lost progress indicators, or just look wrong on the page. There are also repeated claims about sudden battery drops, including devices losing several percentage points in just minutes of reading.

But it’s worth noting that a simple restart seems to have fixed the battery drain issue for some users at least.

That sideloading angle is not coming from Reddit alone. Outside coverage and community videos have also pointed to 5.19.2 causing problems with manga, comics, page tracking, and layout on sideloaded content, which gives the story a bit more weight than the usual one-off firmware grumbling.

For now, there does not seem to be an easy rollback path for ordinary users. And that is why a lot of people are even more frustrated with Amazon. People are not just annoyed by a new UI. They are annoyed because a reading device that is supposed to get out of the way is suddenly doing the opposite.
