Instagram is finally rolling out tap-to-pause on Reels, which means users can stop a video with a single tap instead of pressing and holding on the screen. The company announced the feature officially late yesterday.

This has been a weirdly long saga. Last year, we reported on our sister site that Instagram had spent nearly a year bouncing between tap to pause and tap to mute, with different users seeing different behavior across accounts and updates. For a basic playback control, that was starting to look pretty bad.

Now, finally, it seems Instagram has made up its mind. I tested this too and can confirm that it works. Tapping on the screen now pauses the Reel.

Once the Reel is paused, Instagram shows a mute option on screen, so muting has not disappeared entirely. It just takes an extra step now, which is probably fine for some people and annoying for others.

The reaction so far is pretty mixed. Multiple Reddit posts show this feature has appeared, vanished, and reappeared over time, while plenty of users have been asking Instagram to stop switching the tap behavior back and forth. That alone is notable because it suggests the frustration was never really about one single control so much as Instagram refusing to stick with one.

Some users seem happy that Reels now works in a way that feels more natural and more in line with other short-video apps. But some other users are asking for a toggle to switch between pausing the Reel or muting it. It’s a reasonable ask, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for Instagram to add that anytime soon, if at all.

For now, the main thing is that Reels finally behaves in a more predictable way. After all the flip-flopping, that is probably what users wanted most.
